Arts & Culture and how to discover your new creative passion - Fitness Focus - Mindful Self Check-In

Challenge today is to Find a New Local Arts & Culture group to follow and share.

Definition: Arts & Culture

(Source: Wikipedia)

  • Culture – set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that define a group of people, such as the people of a particular region.

  • The Arts – vast subdivision of culture, composed of many creative endeavors and disciplines. The arts encompasses visual arts, literary arts and the performing arts.

In Sherwood Park, here is a great website I found - Explore Strathcona County. They showcase a curated list of Arts & Culture places, groups, and options within Strathcona County. Another great resource to find a group in your area is Meetup.com.

And... in my biased (yet fantastic) opinion 😁 is a great group that supports writing...

Writers Foundation of Strathcona County (WFSC) - They support any age and any stage of writer. Many of their members have become multi-genre authors as well. I have been involved for a longtime; helping with their Annual Conference, Words in the Park Showcase Event, and online content / website build. If you have an interest in writing, check them out.

For Culture: I encourage you to learn all you can about the cultures in your community. From heritage to history to religion to art forms to expression to important events. Get involved, show support, and help keep connection and culture thriving.

For the Arts: You could set up your own theme nights with family or friends (online works great - hire a local Arts leader to paint, drum, or teach a personalized class) to experience different forms of Art, perhaps you will even discover a new hobby?

  • Improv Comedy Games (Watch Whose Line Is It Anyway or Drew Carey's Improv-A-Ganza on Youtube for ideas)

  • Paint Nights (Pick your favorite tutorial and try it out)

  • Writing Workshops

  • Dancing (YouTube, Technique Practice, For Fun)

  • Poetry Recitals

  • Pottery or Sculpting

  • Crafting (Scrapbooking, Vision Boards, Origami)

  • Hand Crafts (Knitting, Woodworking, Creative Decor)

  • Music Jamboree (Grab your favorite instrument! or 😉 learn together)

  • Video or Film Screening (Create, Watch, Stream, Share)

Here's a video from an Improv Gathering a group of friends and I did (2018):

There are so many options within this category (performing arts, circus, dance, film, music, storytelling, theatre, comedy, crafting... really... any creative form of expression), it's finding something you think is intriguing. Search in your area on a particular activity you enjoy or culture you'd like to know more about and see what comes up.

Fitness Focus: How does your mind feel?

This is more about checking in with yourself. Take a few moments to write down, say out loud, or think about how you have been feeling recently.

  • Are there any ways you have been expressing yourself negatively?

  • Any habits you'd like to learn how to correct?

  • How have your thoughts been?

  • Are you feeling focused and on top of your game?

  • Is there anything you can do to feel better?

  • How can you get to where you want to go?

  • Is the life you're currently living supporting your needs?

  • Are you happy with your mood, thoughts, and actions recently?

  • What's the last thing you chose to do for you mentally?

  • What have you been reading, watching, paying attention to lately?

  • How do you feel checking in with yourself?

I find it a good practice to ask myself out loud how I'm feeling. This task is a mind aspect; is it tired, over worked, blank, calm, focused, etc. It's also important to tune-in to what you think is needed... rest, activity, nutrition, stimulation. Once I can acknowledge where I'm at then I can make plans towards either feeling better or remaining consistent if I'm on the right path.
